We simulate natural environments from around the globe, allowing museum visitors
and school students to learn through Interactive Play.
Biomes
Each biome focuses on the unique geographic features, flora and fauna of an area on Earth. From the dense forests of the Appalachian Mountains, to the barren deserts of the American Southwest, to the barren frozen plains of the Arctic, HoloSands covers 14 unique regions. On top of this we simulate rain and snow, rivers and oceans, evaporation and snow melt, volcanoes and lava, rain shadows from high mountains, erosion and muddy water diffusion, and the destructive force of coastal hurricanes.

We sell either full turn-key exhibits, which include sandbox, electronics, software, sand and installation, or we can license just the software if you wish to build your own sandbox. We license the software as either a Full license, which includes all existing biomes and features, plus any updates and improvements we make in the future, or we can license it on an al-a-carte basis, which allows you to choose the biomes and features best for your price point.
Sandbox Designs
We have built four different sandbox designs so far. Each fit the needs of the given museum or educational environment.
Most of the designs are constructed from shop grade plywood and finished with either stains or laminates, plus rugged materials for the top surface and accent pieces — these include hardwoods or HDPE laminates. Clients may choose stain, laminate, or HDPE colors to match the design language of their facility. We can also customize the sandbox and electronics cage to match the theme of your gallery space, as we did for a nautically themed area of Imagine Children’s Museum, in Everett, Washington.
Each design complies with ADA guidelines for wheelchair access. Some designs have built in storage space, or steps for the smallest children. We have a proposed design that includes a secondary monitor for displaying more information about each biome.
We group sandboxes into three (3) groups based on the size of the sand basin:
- Large — (12-15 visitors) — (60″ x 38.5″) — (152 x 98 cm)
- Medium — (7-10 visitors) — (48″ x 30″) — (122 x 76 cm)
- Small/Portable — (4-5 visitors) — (30″ x 18″) — (76 x 46 cm)
The cost of each is based on materials required, construction time, and the projector required for adequate brightness (bigger sandboxes require more expensive projectors which are much brighter).
